I don't have ScalaMM300 installed on disk still, but the manual has VGA
modes like Double PAL mentioned as far back as ScalaMM200, so I'd say
yes it would.

I can tell you for a fact that it can. I'm using ScalaMM300 to link
together various rendered anims, which it does perfectly. More than I
can say for Powerpoint!

Just a little thing that's been bugging me for a while, what does OEM
actually stand for and why do companies do it? For instance, a motherboard
would have cost me 120 retail box but I got it for 60 OEM. All that was
missing was the pretty box.

Subject: [afb] Gateway are strangling Amiga (IMHO)
Date: Fri, 05 Nov 1999 06:57:27 -0800
To AFB Members,
I apologise if this will be a bit long, but I believe that we have been
blaming Amiga for all the problems when I think that Gateway (their
owners) haven't helped either. In fact, this is my damning on
Gateway...
I have read many of Gateway's policies on their website
(http://www.gateway.com), and in fairness, they DO comply to these
policies so long as the division concerned is the PC one, i.e. not the
Amiga division. I quote:
" Our "You've got a friend in the business"=AE slogan encourages
relationships. The world of computers seems complex and
confusing. Its history started with slick, high-margin sales. We
changed all that. Now when customers want a fair deal and honest,
respectful, caring treatment, they turn to Gateway. "
Well, in 1997, Amigans were glad that big bucks Gateway bought the
down-and-out Amiga Technologies GmbH, now, 2000 is encroaching and we
have no real delivering from Amiga, except a OS update which took three
years, OS 3.5. The section "Now when customers want a fair deal and
honest, respectful, caring treatment, they turn to Gateway." is
rubbish as far as Amigans are concerned since this needs to be adapted
to read after the main part
"However, when Amigans want a fair deal and honest, respectful, caring
treatment, they turn to Gateway and we obligingly say 'Pi*s of you
money scrounging filth, just because you have the best computer, and
somehow suvived two bankruptcies doesn't mean we're gonna listen to
you!'"
Can you honestly say that Gateway gave Amiga or Amigans a 'Caring
Treatment', no, we got CEO changes by the gallon and ditched plans by
the bucket load'. Gateway are trying to make money from Amiga by
giving no initial REAL development funds, I mean Gateway got the hump
when Jim Collas used, wow $1 million dollars. So if Gateway get the
hump each time Amiga uses $1 million, can you actually see this
revolution being a sucess, at least with the Gateway owned Amiga?
Consider that a single TV advert can cost about =A310,000 for half a
minute at prime time, you're not going to get much marketing, then take
into account a development budget and funds to persuade hardware
manufacturers to use Amiga's OE, how on earth can a earth shaking
campaign be done with $1 million dollars?!
<Gateway>
"That promise, at home or office, means living up to some very high
standards. That doesn't scare us. Sure, we face big risks if we don't
deliver on that promise, but we also enjoy rewards when we do."
Well, that must either mean that Amiga have been unlucky and those
promises are always broken, or is it that Gateway only care about their
PC business and don't give a jack sh*t about Amiga and Amigans. The
latter applies. So what rewards do they enjoy by messing about with
Amiga? I bet some power-crazed idiot at Gateway enjoys laughing at the
way we react when they cut Amiga's budgets and so on. I mean, even
Amiga's website is, well, very amateur. Compare it to the slick Apple
website (sorry!), and you'll see that Amiga's website needs a facelift.
I mean honestly, they still have the A1200 and A4000T shown on their
site which are machines with a combination of 1985/1991 and 1995
technology! But this is not Amiga's fault - if Gateway gave Amiga time
and money, then Amiga may have been able to advertise a new Amiga-type
machine.
But alas none of this happened. :-( x 1000000000000000
So, I now call all of you to now bombard Gateway with your problems,
not Amiga - since it's them, that's stopping Amiga, do you think Amiga
really would choose not to make a future for itself and deserved
Amigans, I think not...
Nick.

If you have the CD, look for a file that has the extension "=2Eins"; I

There are no books for 2000 (i.e. Resource Kits), so we use

Try excusing yourself from the table, saying "just got to use the
toilet". Then sneak off into the kitchen, quietly do the washing up,
walk back into the living room and put your feet up. Then when asked
if you're going to do the dishes say "in your dreams woman" and bury

Bad programming that, authors ought to be keeping a track of available
resources, as nothing else will know how much memory that program is
going to need.
Here's one that peeves me all the time: Programs that require a
specific file, or version of it, but won't tell you. Surely it's not
too hard for some program that does a mass check for it's files at
start up (like some do), to actually tell you it couldn't find version
12.4 of file xyz, instead of just quitting silently, or crashing.

Joules is energy. The building blocks of the whole lot.
Voltage is the difference in potential between two points.
Current is what does the meaty stuff (and kills you if there's enough of
it [30 milli amps], no matter what the voltage is).
Watts is Voltage x Current.
And Voltage and Current are inter-related (Current is proportional to
the Voltage through a Resistance).

Hahahhaha. But I think if I saw someone heading for the kitchen, after
they'd just told me they were going to the loo, I'd probably stop them.

Its used by MagicWB2.0. The file is called ataditm in the distribution
directory and copied to S: as mti.data. If you play it using Play16 or
something you'll get the THX sound sample. Its the one used by the "Optmised
for greater WOrkbench performance" thing that occassionally apeears when
using MWB. Deleting mti.data apparently stops this from occurring.

MiamiOEM is coming later. That's bad. But there are many issues
with including a fully-capable IP stack in an upgrade - i.e.
people will download the upgrade and just use the stack whether
they have 3.5 or not.
Unless you see it coming on CD exclusively, in which case you'd
have to pay for the CD and delivery.

It's unlikely to happen in this issue, which is the last one out this year,

Some programs alter the registry and register DLLs which really do
need a restart for them to be fully applied. Some parts of the registry
can ONLY be altered by rebooting the machine, because they ONLY get
read and acted upon on STARTUP.
It's plainly obvious they *DO* need to reboot - if you understand how
Windows does things.

The easy option is to fix the problem. I must have about 3
books here that tell me how to change default settings on
Windows 95, 98, NT4 and 2000.
> image of a working, default settings, hard disk (using a

Let me guess. You're using BNC cabling (whoops! bad idea)
and if you aren't then your machines definitely aren't
switched directly to the server, in which case the network
just can't TAKE the data that's going through.
The program is not at fault. If the people who installed it
actually cared about the network topography, you'd be in
a better position now.

Not quite. Joules are derived units. The important building block here
is elecrical charge. It quite arbitrary, really. It depends mostly on
what angle you're coming from. But bear in mind that I=n*Qe/s - where
n=number of electrons, Qe is the charge on an electron and s is the time
it took for all those electrons to pass a point. No joules there.
>
> Watts is Voltage x Current.

No, *POWER* = Voltage x Current, and the units of power are Watts
(usualy - eg, you could have units of KiloCaleries per Annum, but the
scientific and engineering communities would frown on you =).
> And Voltage and Current are inter-related (Current is proportional to
> the Voltage through a Resistance).
Only if the conductor is ohmic and at constant temperature/cross
sectional area/length. Diodes are definately NOT omhic, for example, as
they only conduct fully in one direction, and require a certain voltage
before they operate.

Well, I'm glad it's not just me that has trouble. :\
Someone somewhere down the line must be using a little creative dating.
The girl at Power said that the 'goods had been sent' when I phoned on
Monday. She didn't actually say what day. But then the Citylink man
said that they had only got the package to deliver on Monday, yet they
had tried to deliver it to me on Monday but no one was in. This must
have been about an hour after I phoned Power. This sugests that if
Power had only despached the package on Monday as citylink claim then
citylink are capable of one hour delivery. So after all this why did
it still take 4 days?
Must lie down now my brain hurts.

What you're forgetting about is the weekend! For starters, next-day
delivery only applies to working days - you have to pay extra for a
Saturday delivery. So, taking the weekend out of your calculations,
leaves 2 days.
Of course, presuming CityLink collected your parcel from Power on
Thursday evening, you should have received it on Friday. CityLink
may well have stuffed up if this is the case. Or you may have ordered
too late in the day to make it in time for the CityLink collection at
Power. You could phone Power and tell them about the situation. If
CityLink have failed to deliver next-day, then CityLink should offer
some kind of refund, which Power should pass on to you.

You misunderstand. I'd love to see what CadTech are doing.
But can I get a copy of Imagine?
No. Nobody does, unless they enrolled in that ACUP thing.

It's on the Unicode site. What can I say?
Either way, it's YOUR mailer that has the problem. It should just ignore
the charset and display as normal, throwing errors up is no way to act!

Oh, don't mind me, I'm just bitter about the way, for the past 10 years
or so, each new school year I have been told by my science teachers that
everything we were taught last year wasn't entirely accurate or true. I

AFAIK the primary port is just a passthrough, so you shouldnt need the
IDE software just for a single HD (at least I dont..I only load IDEFIX
to access the drives on channel 2)
I take it the drive isnt formatted yet..what happens if the 3.5" HD is
set to Master, and put on the primary channel(with all other devices
removed) does it show up then from a Floppy boot of WB in HDtoolbox?
One other thing springs to mind..from what you said above, it sounds
like you tried your brothers 2.5" HD and primary master, and your 3.5"
drive as primary slave, I remember reading in AF that quite a few 2.5"
HD`s are made to be the only HD on the cable and stop other drives
being seen, and in some case even stop it from booting!..maybe this is
the problem. If so, you`ll have to format your 3.5 from floppy boot and
then reconnect the 2.5 as master on secondary to copy any files you
want from that.
Hope this helps

Thanks, I have now tried connecting the 3.5" drive to the secondary
port using the patch and now the 3.5" drive is found by the software,
however, dispite clearly being unit 2 when I went to partition it the
2.5" drive (unit 0) was partioned instead, and I have just spent the
last 45 minutes recovering my brother's files with QuarterBack Tools.
I'm going to try it again in a minute, but if I can format it
successfuly will I be able to boot from it as as the moment it isn't
recognised at the start up menu?
Thanks Again

OI! I've never killed nobody!
Besides, I thought it was Amps that killed.
The HT side of a car's ignition system is a good example - it produces
over 20k volts for each spark (depending on age, make and type of
ignition system, this can be over 30k volts), but won't kill you unless
you have a dodgy heart/pacemaker/whatever.

That's as may be, but some programs just don't give you the option to
reboot, they just make you, or just tell you that it's going to happen,
and this should NOT be the case on a server.

I've only one problem and that's my IOBlix board has stopped working
under 3.5. I did try the NSDPatch config file but the whole sytem
refused to boot whilst trying it.
Still unable to make the IOBlix function.

I would be wary too, if it wasn't for the fact that one of their
partners is F1 Racing magazine (which I subscribe too :) This alone
adds weight to how much Callnet0800 can be trusted. See
http://www.f1racing.co.uk/ if you're interested. Still, I'm giving
them a miss for the moment, as I'm sure they'll have problems to
start with - besides, their freephone registration line is overloaded
in a major way ;)
Additionally, I see that Oftel have told BT to reduce the cost of
net access phone calls! There's a story about it on
http://www.theregister.co.uk/991105-000018.html - BT may be forced to
offer unmetered calls for internet access.

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer, which refers to the person
or company to which it's being supplied. OEM products are designed to be
sold to companies which are building their own 'boxes' and pre-installing
their choice of software. It's not designed to be sold to end-users, so it
comes without all the pretty packaging and, quite often, printed manuals.

Hi folks, I did post this Wednesday, but it doesnt seem to have got

I am having a problem with IRC. When I log onto certain channels it
comes up with, "hi, I use Root as my Username - maybe you should
change yours." message. I have also been automatically banned from
Matts #moobunny site for supposedly trying to log in using Root
instead of another name.
However, I have Genesis set up with two users - Root (because it will
not let me change its name to something else) and Bifford (my
nickname). I *always* use Bifford, so why do the IRC channels think I
am still using Root? I cannot see anything else in Genesis' prefs to
change and it wont let me change the first user from being Root.
Can anybody help please?
Oh, and Matt, if i get this sorted will your channel then let me in or
do you have to unbloack me?

There is an IV24 EX that will run Scala on a graphic card from GVP.
(Impact Vision 24) I can run
Scala in ModePro but it will not show the frames. I can see all

Hmm, arn't we geting dangerously close to the "you need Windoes 95 or better"
mentality here. If a program genuinely requires resources only available in 3.5
then it won't run on earlier versions anyway. If it doesn't then why restrict
it's usage to people who have upgraded. The Amiga software market is small
enough as it is.

We're talking about the OEM version for os3.5 and stopping people that
don't have 3.5 using it. Which is more than fair.

No Need as there was a fault at the duplicators. This is why V and
webvision do not work. It is just a matter of a quick download from
vapor and Aminet as the prereleases work fully with the netconnect3
key as does Webvision.
As for Chris not sending out c.d's... I doubt very much he is
allowed to knowingly send out faulty c.d's. The duplicators are
dragging their heels hoping they won't have to cover the cost of
damage, pretending it wasn't their fault, Chris can only wait.
The package itself is very good and well worth buying. Now I have
prerelease 5 of voyager the whole thing is more stable.
Peace

Mmm, it's nice to read from people who went through such experience!
I'm sure someone more technical down there will give a proper answer, but
I'd like to mention that when you want to check ignition, you don't
ususally hold the metallic part of the wire *and* the end of the plug at
the same time, so it sort of weakens the effect of them volts, watts or
amps...
.
It's even best to seize the wire using a dry cloth, and if you're careful
not to touch the body of the car, you feel almost nothing, except of course
fear from previous shocks <:-z

Whenever the 200 daily limit has been reached, Yam pretends to send your

Please, someone put me out of my missery! Is there a famous watch company
called Amiga? I was listening to the radio, and the advert went something
along the lines of:
Lady 1:"My son has all the latest fashion accessories, but where can I find
an Amiga watch?"
Lady 2:"Amiga? they're brilliant, try John Morely's"
Then the conversation continues about amiga watches....

Maybe just to make it that bit harder to inadvertently delete a file.
. . With it not being moved to trash or somewhat, it's a bit of a twat
going through the disk with disksalve for that file you accidently
sentanced to death. Probably :)

UK electrical goods will work over in States as long as you purchase some
sort of voltage adapter. Also US goods will work over here.....I have an

Simple. Volts is the amount of "push" or "pressure" on the electrons goin=
g through a circuit, amps is the number of electrons passing through a po=
int on the circuit over a given time, and watts is the amount of energy u=
sed to push those electrons.
Amps (I) =3D Volts (V) / Resitance (R)
So the more you "push" the electrons, the greater the current (amps). The=
more resistance in the circuit to impede the flow, the less the current.=
Watts (W) =3D Volts (V) * Current (I)
So the amount of energy used is determined by how hard the electrons are =
being pushed, and how fast they are moving.

The PSU in your tower should have a switch to take it from 240v to

Assuming you are using AmIRC, there should be a string gadget on the main
window when you first load it (where you select your server) called
Username. If this is ghosted then deselect the Use IdentD checkbox. This
string gadget is where the IRC server gets your username from (its probably
set to 'root') so you will need to change it here.
I suffered exactly the same problem on EFNet and it took me f'ing ages to
figure out how to unghost the gadget :)
You may have to opt to not load IdentD in GENESiSPrefs (I don't think there
is a seperate option, i think you just deslect Load InetD or something)

I wanted to answer first, but I've just had strange troubles with Yam
again - or maybe it was my ISP : about 20 messages held for one hour!
Anyway, I'm pretty sure Mash was trying to trap someone. That one was

Maybe it's only a coincidence, but I've just had problems with
club-internet.fr too. First I couldn't send anything; and I didn't get a
single message for one hour.
I emailed myself twice, with no result, so I watched the Afb messages from
IBrowse, found mine, and several others that hadn't reached my mailbox.
When I came back to Yam, I sent myself another mail and received it at
once. After a while, the messages I had seen on the web arrived in total
chronological disorder. The very first one /I/ had sent came last!
Must be sailors' knots in the web, I think.

Isn't the Ez-Tower just a PC case with a different back panel?
If so can't you just toggle the 120/230 volt switch on the back of the
PSU depending on what country you're in? If it doesn't have a switch
just by a new psu that does have one and fit it in your tower. Should
cost under 20UKP. Then all you need is a mains lead.
I'm assuming the PSU can handle 60Hz as well as the lower voltage but
if not just buy a PSU when you get to the states instead. Probably be
cheaper too.

There's nothing mean about it, nor is it a bad programming practice. The
whole reason you must specify a version when calling OpenLibrary() is
to ensure that the application doesn't crash when it encounters an
older version of that library.
Hacking and fooling Miami into thinking it *HAS* got the correct library =
when in fact it has not, *IS* rather mean and like all hacks, has the pot=

I can honestly tell you that NC3 is well worth it once the problems
are ironed out. Plus don't forget it is all work in progress so
updates will be regular and constantly improving the setup.
I would definately reccommend joining the netconnect mail list also
as that is were you are most likely to get the best responce to

Subject: [afb] Next Day Delivery. Help needed.
Date: Sat, 06 Nov 1999 11:45:13 +0000
Hello All,
Well my stuff finally arrived on Tuesday (2.11.) after they had tried
to deliver on Monday, the only day the house was empty for an hour!
When he dropped it off the City Link nam told the wife that they had
only been given the package on Monday, While Power tell me that it was
despached on the Thursday before. Draw your own conclusions.
Now the real problems start. The trackball and Punchinello are
execellent, true Amiga plug'n'play. The problem is with the new 3.1
ROM's. The 3.5 handbook tells me that the ROM's should be installed as
per the instructions that were in the box with the ROM's. My ROM's
were packed seperatly and there is no instructions as to which goes
where.
The ROM's are numbered thus, 391773-01 391774-01
28663A 29147A
Between thes are the version numbers. Can anyone tell me which sockets
they go in assuming that I am looking at the mb with the connectors
facing away from me and pcmcia slot on my left.
Sorry that this has been such a long mail and Thanks in advance for
any help offered.
Bye for now, P.C.

I've had this three times with Power myself. The best one being my Power
Tower, that didn't actually leave Power until 3 weeks after I'd bought it
and paid for next-day delivery. Power insisted that Citylink kept screwing
up the delivery (going to wrong houses etc).
My Kylwalda took 4 days on next-day delivery and my Power Flyer took 3 days

Uh oh - there should have been an 8 page booklet detailing the ROM
installation for variou systems. Well, I got one of those, at least
(yes, from Power).

Unfortunately, the instructions for an A1200 don't make this clear! :(
I would assume 391773-01 goes in the lower socket (U6A) and the other
goes in U6B. I'll mail you a scan of instruction page...

Hello, all!
I'm quite worried at the moment because I can't get the mail from Afb
into my mailbox; I've just phoned my ISP, knowing that some of you also
have problems with Yahoo, but they didn't give me a clue.
Anyway, I've read another message ( using my browser :( ) about that
Amiga-Omega confusion.
If I remember correctly, 'Amiga' sounds pretty much like 'Ameega', with a
stress on the second syllable ( at least that's what I heard ten years ago,
listening to that horrible American voice on the A1000 "Thins inz Ameeenga
speanking'" ) whereas Omega is supposed to be stressed on the first
syllable, which I think is a diphtong.
So I wonder if the confusion is really possible; to me it seems as
unlikely as confusing 'petrol' and 'patrol'. Please tell me if I'm wrong.
Patrice
Kind regards

I had a look at the scan of the instructions but the text was too
small to read, maybe because I have to use a scart T.V. as a
moniter. :-(
Anyway, I took your learned advice on the chip positions, and while I
had to bend the pins a bit they fitted easly and are now in and i'm
using then to do this mail.
Tonight I'll try the 3.5 installation.

For one reason or another, I missed most of "Devon amigans ..." thread,

This meeting is going to be held in one of SWAG's member's brewery,

The only problem is that there is not that much space available, and
I'll need to talk to the owner to see how many he can accomodate, but if
you are interested, please feel free to get in contact with me
(preferably ASAP) for more details.
If there is enough interest, a larger, more frequent meeting place can

Your best bet would be Imagine (the website is on every cover CD under
CADTech) that is the best (only?) 3D renderer which is still being worked
on. It's also the cheapest of the mid range ones too, only 120. You'll get
the most/best textures of ANY 3d proggy, animation, morphing, PPC support
etc. I've used it for years (and just recently brought it) You'll also get
updates about every month or so. You can do headlights on cars (check out
the issue which was on sale at this year's WOA show and look at the
gallery. My entry was made with imagine and has visible light in both
images shown.

Um, are you in some way retarded?...ho hum.
1) You CAN buy imagine, I just bought the thing!
2) ditto, exactly what I did.
Plus if you flip the page in AA which has your name on, you'll see a news
article about it, saying clearly it is still open.
But the main point is that it's being written for constantly, it's not just
been left for months (years?) like others (ahem) have. It's actively being
programmed and updated.

The only distributor of Imagine in the UK is CADTech, look on any cover CD
for their website, simple as that. they are looking at letting others sell

I've just got rid of MCP as it is not working very well with OS3.5. One
thing I really miss is some sort of Assign manager, I think this should
be a part of the OS. And maybe they could include a small commodity that
does things like doubleclicktofront, noclick for floppy drives etc. in a
system legal fashion. Maybe they could even build this kind of
functionality into the workbench.library and make it available via the
Workbench prefs editor.

Apparently, only Afb messages are held; I sent mail to other groups and
got it immediately. I've read about 20 messages from Matthew O'Neill using

As Ben Vost told us Power have stock of OS3.5 and I ordered one from them.
They charged my card on 30-OCT-1999, and will send it via AirMail. As of

Does anyone have any problem with Power or some problem with UK Postal

Give the posties a chance :) Chances are, Power despatched your item at
the beginning of the week. You didn't mention which country you are
in... if you're in Europe then it shouldn't take more than 2-4 days to
arrive - elsewhere allow 4-5 days (read, 1 week max). In short, if you
don't receive it by the end the coming week, then that's the time to
start worrying.
You did ask Power if they had any OS 3.5 stock left didn't you?
They might have sold out by the time you ordered (30 October?).

Netvigator is a Hong Kong ISP as far as I know (at least, my dad has
an account there and he's in Hong Kong).
No clue how long it takes to ship stuff there from the UK tho :)
